According to the owner of a small coffee shop, this was supposed to be the best type of grinder. I would not buy this machine again. After about 6 months, it didn't work on all grinds and would cut off.
I wasn't convinced of that, but what I liked about this grinder was that you could place the beans in the top and select how many cups worth of beans you needed to grind. I made sure to watch for clogs and it ran for about 6 more months and then it stopped working all together.To be honest, it never ground better than my old simple blade coffee/nut/spice grinder. She explained the difference between mill grinders and regular grinders.
I figured that it needed a quick cleaning and I carefully made sure that the openings were clear of caked grounds. It was also appealing that you could select the type of preferred grind. For the first several months, I loved this machine.
The Melitta was certainly convenient, but my old grinder still works and it was less than half the price of the Melitta Coffee Mill. It isn't worth the price - it isn't that much cooler of a kitchen knick-knack to have, the results are not better than cheaper grinders, it clogs, and it burns out.
Worst of all, the grind is inconsistent. This grinder dances around the counter, the suction feet are of no use. I thought I couldn't go wrong with a burr grinder, I was mistaken. I get fine grind mixed with chunks. It's insanely noisy. I have to hold it together when I do grind with it because the cup tries to fall off due to all of the shaking. I've owned this for about 2 years and it hasn't gotten a ton of usage at all. I'm replacing it with a Cuisinart Grind and Brew, at least I know that machine is reliable.
The grind is extremely inconsistent. Really hate to be negative here, but this thing sucks. It's impossible to actually clean the old coffee from between the grinding burrs and the container that holds the ground coffee. It makes a huge mess. After using it for 2 months, it jammed on a coffee bean and the motor burned out on me.You get what you pay for.
after it is rinsed out. I have had to use channel locks on it (and hard to do since it is set 1 1/2 inches into the hopper) in order to get it out.DO NOT rinse the coffee grounds that are stuck in it.
Second do not fill the hopper full of beans as if it shuts off before running out of beans the tiny little chute from the grinder to the catch bin will plug up with ground coffee. The ONLY way to clear it is to dump the beans that are left and use a ice pick to clear the chute.
First of all make sure you place this on a LARGE serving tray to catch all the coffee that spews out of it while it is grinding and while you move the coffee to a storage container. Try to take it out and instead of coming out the setting (coarse to fine) turns instead.
Third getting it apart to clean it is an exercise in dexterity and strength. The top burr locks into place (watch out, left handed) and I mean LOCKS.
For some reason the motor is NOT protected from liquids coming in from the top and will not run for several days (weeks). For that reason the coffee dust is probably getting into to motor as well.
I followed his suggested adjustments, and--voila--the grind is now fine and the machine works just great, definitely better than my blade grinder and a lot less than other burr and cone grinders. I tried it, and it did, indeed, seem coarser than I desired. I was given this Melitta Mill by a friend who only used a few times, as the grind was too coarse. At the listed price, this is a pretty good deal, even if not as good as mine. Since there was no manual with the coffee mill, I searched the Web, and ended up with R. Johnson's 2005 feedback.
